About Us

The Association of Calicut University Teachers (ACT) stands as a resolute bastion of progressive thought and action within the University of Calicut, the largest university in Kerala. Established in 1968 and governed by the Calicut University Act of 1975, the University of Calicut has played a vital role in shaping the socio-economic and educational landscape of the region. As one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Kerala, it continues to uphold its legacy of academic excellence and social commitment.

ACT, as the largest and most dynamic teachers’ association within the University, embodies the spirit of democratic, secular, and socialist values. Rooted in the fervent spirit of social progress and intellectual freedom that marked the formation of Kerala as a state in 1956, and the subsequent rise of the first Communist ministry under the leadership of Com. E. M. Sankaran Namboothirippadu (popularly known as EMS), ACT has remained steadfast in championing the rights of university teachers while promoting quality education and progressive ideals.

Since its inception, ACT has been committed to teaching and protecting the principles of social justice and equality in the field of higher education. As a leftist organization rooted in leftist ideologies, ACT is driven by the fundamental belief that education must remain a public good, accessible to all, and free from commercialization and commodification. Upholding its commitment to academic freedom and autonomy, ACT has been at the forefront of struggles against the commoditization and saffronisation of higher education, which threaten the foundational principles of inclusivity and democratic governance.

ACT has a rich history of organizing revolutionary and path-breaking movements to safeguard the rights and dignity of teachers, research scholars, and students alike. It has consistently fought to enhance the quality of higher education while advocating for fair terms of service and professional recognition. The association’s proactive stance in addressing the challenges faced by educators and its unwavering commitment to democratic principles have established it as an emblem of strength and pride among the academic community.
As an affiliated body of the All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (AIFUCTO) at the national level and the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA), Kerala, ACT remains deeply involved in nationwide and state-level struggles for social justice and educational rights. Its active participation in collective action and intellectual discourses underscores its dedication to safeguarding the educational space from authoritarian and exploitative policies imposed by national regimes.

ACT is not only a platform for advocating teachers’ rights but also a vibrant intellectual forum that contributes significantly to the social and cultural fabric of Kerala. The organization continues to inspire and mobilize the academic community to remain vigilant and resilient in the face of socio-political challenges, thereby ensuring that the university space remains a sanctuary of free thought and progressive action.
In its journey forward, ACT remains resolute in its mission to foster academic integrity, nurture critical thought, and empower university teachers as catalysts of social change. By upholding the principles of justice, equity, and collective action, ACT continues to shape the higher education landscape and advocate for a future where future where knowledge and education are rooted in humanistic values.
